This book is an aikido classic. Written and illustrated by two early Western aikido practitioners, Adele Westbrook and Oscar Ratti, it was first printed in 1970. Having enjoyed numerous re-printings, this popular book remains today a valuable resource for beginners of the art and a "must-have" for every aikidoist's library.
Offering an historical overview of the art of aikido, insights into the philosophy which informs it, practical aspects of the organizational structure, core principles, basic and advanced techniques, applications and neutralizations and more, Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere is a clearly written and comprehensive volume. Unaltered from its original printing, it has the additional benefit of giving the reader a glimpse into the aikido of the Honbu Dojo a quarter of a century ago.
From the jacket, "Aikido is a method of self-defense which can be used against any form of attack and - at its highest levels - a Discipline of Coordination, a "way" of harmonizing all of man's vital powers. There is no attack in aikido; i.e., its goal is merely to neutralize an aggression and render the attacker harmless, without causing him any serious injury if at all possible. To do this requires skill, but even more, it requires an ethical intention. The very word aikido, in fact, contains the three elements which comprise the art: (ai), harmony or coordination; (ki), spirit or energy; (do), the method, the "way."
A man who studies and practices aikido correctly, desires only to defend himself without hurting others. To possess this attitude, one must achieve a very high level of integration of the powers of mind and body, the harmonious combination of physical means and ethical motives."
Adele Westbrook and Oscar Ratti, a husband and wife team, began their study of aikido in 1962. Other books they have co-authored are Secrets of the Samurai, and a three-volume series of historical fiction entitled Tales of the Hermit.
Here is a unique approach to the teachings of the Founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, as interpreted by his direct student of fifteen years. Mitsugi Saotome examines the spiritual philosophy of the Founder of Aikido, the warrior ideals of feudal Japan as the basis of his martial arts philosophy, and the scientific principles underlying the philosophy of Aikido technique.
The author shows that the physical movement of Aikido is the embodiment of principles of the spirit. Negative force is not countered with aggression but is controlled and redirected through the power and balance of spiral movement. This is the shape of Aikido and the dynamic shape at the foundation of all energies of existence. Aikido movement can only be understood from its roots in universal law and the processes of nature. The sincere practice and study of Aikido deepens our appreciation for the perfection of nature's balance and brings us back into harmony with our environment, other people, and ourselves.
Abundantly illustrated with the author's drawings, diagrams, and calligraphies, as well as photographs demonstrating Aikido techniques, the book also offers a history of Aikido, personal anecdotes about the Founder, and translations of several of his lectures.
In Budo Mind and Body, Nicklaus Suino explains that Budo, or the practice of traditional Japanese martial arts for self-cultivation, is about more than learning how to fight. Real budo is a way of seeking and grasping meaning in life. Suino's advice on training and etiquette will be helpful to beginning students, and will act as a potent reminder to more seasoned practitioners. Advanced students will especially appreciate Suino's explanation of budo philosophy. In the appendices, the author also includes a survey of Japanese martial arts, the eight essential texts on budo, and an annotated bibliography.
Enlightenment through Aikido focuses on Aikido's spiritual teachings, drawing on Sunadomari's sensei’s experiences as a direct student of Morihei Ueshiba. Quotes from the founder and the author's interpretations show how Aikido can develop inner strength and tranquility. This book is an excellent companion for those practitioners who aspire to go beyond the physical in their journey along the path of Aikido.
Kanshu Sunadomari was a live-in student in his teens of the Founder of Aikido, just prior to World War II. After the war, he was one of the first people to begin teaching the art of Aikido, and in 1961 he received the rank of 9th dan directly from the Founder. After his teacher's passing, Sunadomari formed an independent organization to study the spiritual teachings of Aikido. In 1999, he named his practice Aiki Manseido, symbolizing his dedication to disseminating the Founder's philosophy to future generations and developing the art as a way to help bring about world peace.

About the author
Kenji Ushiro was born on January 15, 1949 in Kobayashi City, Miyazaki Prefecture. In 1967, he entered Miyazaki University and became a member of the Karate Club. After graduation, Ushiro moved to Osaka and there had an opportunity to practice a traditional form of Okinawan karate. He began to have doubts about the competitive karate he had practiced up until then and started training directly under Nikichi Zaha Sensei. Since then, he has devoted himself to the study of Zaha Karate. He is 7th dan and Kyoshi of Iaido, of the All-Japan Kendo Federation, and also 8th dan and Kyoshi of Shindo-ryu Karate-do.
In 1986, Ushiro became Head of the Technological Reserarch Institute of Yoshimura Denki Corporation. In 1991, he served as the company's Managing Director. Ushiro became President of Tokei Electrical Engineering Corporation in 1996 and, in 1997, was appointed President of Kaga Components Corporation. In 2004, he formed the UK Jissen Juku which he currently heads. (UK stands for Ushiro Karate and Universal Karate.)
The inspirational teachings of Morihei Ueshiba in this collection show that the real way of the warrior is based on compassion, wisdom, fearlessness, and love of nature. The teachings are drawn from the talks and writings of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido, a mind-body discipline he called the "Art of Peace," which offers a nonviolent way to victory in the face of conflict. Ueshiba believed that Aikido principles could be applied to all the challenges we face in life-in personal relationships, as we interact with society, and at work and in business.
This edition is a much-expanded version of the original miniature edition that appeared in the Shambhala Pocket Classics series. It features a wealth of new material, including a biography of Ueshiba; an essay by John Stevens that presents Ueshiba's views on "The Art of War versus the Art of Peace"; newly translated doka, didactic "poems of the Way"; and Ueshiba's own calligraphies.
The Book of Five Rings is one of the most insightful texts on the subtle arts of confrontation and victory to emerge from Asian culture. Written not only for martial artists but for leaders in all professions, the book analyzes the process of struggle and mastery over conflict that underlies every level of human interaction.
The Book of Five Rings -which has become a well-known classic among American business people, studied for its insights into the Japanese approach to business strategy - was composed in 1643 by the famed duelist and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Unlike previous editions of The Book of Five Rings,
Thomas Cleary's is an accessible translation, free of jargon, with an introduction that presents the spiritual background of the warrior tradition. Along with Musashi's text, Cleary translates another important Japanese classic on leadership and strategy: The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War by Yagyu Munenori, which highlights the ethical
and spiritual insights of Taoism and Zen as they apply to the way of the warrior.

Hiroshi Ikeda sensei skillfully demonstrates aikido suwariwaza, from basic drills to advanced applications. Suwariwaza are techniques performed from a centered, seated position. In feudal Japan, sitting and kneeling were such common postures that samurai routinely practiced suwariwaza as a means for survival. Suwariwaza are excellent aids to center development.

Aikido and Japanese Sword is a remarkable new DVD that illuminates the relationship of traditional sword to aikido barehanded techniques. Created by William Gleason, a long-time student of S. Yamaguchi shihan in Japan, and later M. Saotome shihan in the U.S., Gleason sensei offers a unique perspective on the art. (See his article My Experience with Yamaguchi Sensei first published in the December 2000 Bu Jin Design Newsletter.) His new martil arts DVD includes illustrations, explanations and demonstrations of principles of shobu and shinbu; mat work showing sword and open hand kata and applications; as well as vintage footage of Yamaguchi shihan and his student Noguchi sensei. In this entertaining and enlightening production, Gleason sensei shares his wealth of experience and knowledge of important aspects of aikido.
Decorate your dojo, home, or automobile windows with this classic rendition of the kanji for the art of "Aikido". Manufactured from heavy duty, weather resistant vinyl, this decal sticks to the outside of the window and looks as though the calligraphy was hand painted on the surface. The decal is 6" tall by 2" wide and comes in white only.
If purchased by itself we will send it via 1st class mail in the U.S. Additional shipping costs required for overseas orders. If purchased with other items regular shipping costs apply.
In An Aikido Seminar with Terry Dobson, the late Terry Dobson, a ten-year student and uchi deshi of aikido's founder, Moreihei Ueshiba O Sensei, left an unforgettable legacy, particularly among aikidoists in the U.S. This memorable DVD is edited from a VHS video of a seminar Dobson sensei conducted in San Francisco in 1990. Here you will find the quintessential Terry Dobson: his stories, his passion, his insights into Aikido, his heart and his humor. Special features include scene selections, weblinks, a biography, a tribute by Robert Bly, and more. In addition, a free transcription of the seminar may be downloaded through a weblink provided on the disk. This martial arts DVD is 80 minutes long and has been color corrected for improved quality.
Using groundbreaking Digital Motion Capture Technology (think Gollum in the movie Lord of the Ring), Digital Experiments in Aikido is a fascinating experiment in recording and visualizing the art of aikido. Its producers emphasize that this is not an instructional video; rather it is an exploration of the potential of new technology and its application to the study of physical arts and sports, particularly aikido.
Part One of the video documents each step of the DMCT process: senior aikidoists are recorded wearing special markers under infrared cameras, and animated graphics explain how visualizations are then created from the data.
Part Two consists of computer animations of captured techniques, presenting aikido in innovative ways not possible with normal photography. The project team presents its conclusions on the current and future potential of using motion capture with aikido.
The DVD is 30 minutes long and has Chapter Menus. NTSC DVD format.

The tiger represents strength, grace, balance, and beauty. Funakoshi Sensei, the founder of Shotokan Karate-do, chose the Tiger as an unofficial symbol for his art. This piece was originally designed to convey the strength the Tiger represents as a symbol of Karate-Do.
Originally done in Black and White Pen and Ink, the art has now changed. Just as Aikido practice has added color to my martial art background, this piece has been given new life with color in Adobe Photoshop. I have changed the artwork to represent Aikido with the Kanji on the belt and the addition of the Harmony symbol to the left. I believe the tiger stands as an appropriate symbol for Aikido as well as Karate-do. The cat conveys the balance, center, and "fall on your feet" ukemi we practice (o.k. we're not that good). Like all cats, the tiger can be soft and relaxed (good qualities for good Aikido), but likewise can be quick and efficient in his strength. This particular Tiger is sporting Bu Jin® Design's 12 oz Dogi jacket and pants, and is ready to take ukemi for Tres Hofmeister Sensei at Boulder Aikikai.
"Bu Jin® Tiger with Dogi" is available 17" tall by 11" wide, printed on glossy card stock, and signed and numbered by the artist, Dante Lividini.

Wanting to see what the tiger looked like in full Aikido gear, I followed up the "Tiger in Dogi" piece with this one. Again sporting Bu Jin Design's 12 oz Dogi jacket and pants, this Tiger is also now ready in his made to order Bu Jin Hakama (especially altered so as not to snag the claws). This piece was designed by request from a Boulder Aikikai member, and I believe this Tiger is officially enrolled in open classes there. Having just drawn his katana, this tiger waits patiently to take on Hiroshi Ikeda Sensei himself.

Katatetori, one of the most general of aikido studies in static energy, is possibly one of the most feasible approaches. From stillness comes movement. We are not confined in movement because someone has us by the wrist but rather are implored by the countless possibilities of what movement has to offer us.

This piece was created in pencil in 1997 and was later rendered in Adobe Photoshop to capture the flowing movement associated with aikido and its techniques. This image demonstrates power without the use of strength and the effects this power can have on one's opponents - maximum efficiency with minimal effort.

Sankyo is one of my favorite techniques. It fully demonstrates what aikido and its power are all about - with very little movement great distances can be covered.

This piece was originally a pencil drawing created in 1997 and later rendered in Adobe Photoshop. The suwari waza techniques of aikido are stand alone exercises by way of which nage must use nothing but proper skill and timing to achieve the desired effects. There are no short cuts when practicing these techniques.
