"Get the attacker to see your point of view," was the way this part of irimi was explained to me. Although it was meant as a suggestion to my technique, I've always liked that explanation because it echoes a larger purpose of the training - to find a civilized solution to an uncivilized situation. Many people react poorly when faced with aggression, whether it is physical or verbal. Being able to deal with our own fear and anger in the heat of the moment can help us show our aggressors another way.
The image began as a sketch based on a photo reference. The sketch was scanned and then finished with the illustration program called Painter.
